Getting Unfucked
Friday 6

So, I decided I would start out cleaning today by doing the challenges.  However, before I could, disaster struck.  The toilet in the main bathroom overflowed.  Luckily, I’ve been keeping up with maintenance.  I moved everything on the floor into the shower and used the towels from earlier in the week to mop up.  Then I steam mopped the bathroom floor and wiped everything down (even the floor) with Lysol before putting stuff back.  D couldn’t tell what went wrong with the toilet, but he did put in cleaner afterwards (he’s getting trained).

I am so glad I have been keeping the bathroom clean.  It could have been so much worse.  Nothing was damaged or destroyed.  Before UfYH, there would have been paper, books, magazines, etc. on the floor and it would have been an even bigger mess.  After all that work, I packed for my trip this weekend and that ended my day.

Sunday 6

I did pretty much what I planned today.  Counters got cleaned, floors swept, carpet vacuumed, and trash taken out.  I couldn’t quite fit in steam mopping, so I’ll do that tomorrow.  M and I went to Big Lots and stocked up on fabric bins and desk organizers.  Even picked up a closet organizer for D’s smaller hunting stuff (hats, gloves).  I didn’t pack in much today, so I could work on knitting.  Got a good start on a baby hat for another shower this week.

Tomorrow we will set up the fabric bins on the laundry shelves.  M will also work on filling the desk drawers and clearing the desk top.  We have two extra desktop computers I need to look at for cannibalization; we really only need one and they’re taking up desk space.  I’m thinking about moving around furniture and measuring room dimensions/layout.  General sorting/organization will probably also be on the agenda.

Saturday 5

Today was kind of slow.  We didn’t take off the baby bed today, but will get it later in the week.  We decided to go baby gift shopping and got 2 Paul Frank items and another monkey themed outfit for about $20 on sale (we saved at least $50 woot!).  I picked up a 3M picture hanger and some hooks (used coupons from their site) at Target.  Sadly, they did not have any of the cord hooks, so I will have to look elsewhere.

I worked for about 40 minutes on fixing the desk.  The problem was worse than I thought. Every drawer was broken in some way and not done correctly to begin with.  I’m waiting for the wood glue to dry to see if they will be at all functional.  I’m hoping they will be able to hold small items like pens to keep those off the surface of the desk.  I also measured the laundry shelves finally.  We have extra shelves exactly like them broken down in the corner of the spare room.  Need to figure out what to do with them, but they take up little room in one corner, so it is not a major problem.

Tomorrow I will be working on the weekly trash and maintenance.  This means cleaning out the fridge, wiping down the counters, and sweeping and vacuuming the floors.  If I have time, I would also like to steam mop.  I think at least once a month will work for steam mopping if I can’t get to it more often.  Now that the spare room is mostly done, I’m not sure how long all this will take.  Any extra time will be devoted to clearing off surfaces in the living/dining room and spare room.

Wednesday 2

Today was another banner day.  I used the vinegar/dawn mix I discussed in my last post on the bathroom counter and shower and let it sit.  It was like magic!  The sink and counter look awesome and the shower is better.  I put up a new shower curtain. I cleaned the toilet, but nothing seems to really be working on the lime scale.  I’ve tried Lysol, CLR, vinegar, denture tablets (really whitened it up), and Coke.  Coke seems to work the best.  I even tried a magic eraser.

I didn’t get to the undercabinet, but I came up with a new solution for the cords.  Also steam mopped, yay.

Tomorrow I start on the living/dining room.

Tuesday 2

Today went really well.  Weather was bad, so I had all day to work on the bathroom. Actually it wasn’t as bad as I thought.  However, I didn’t get to the stuff I planned on.  I decided instead to work on the shower and other small things in the room, like the garbage can. Go big or go home.

I put everything washable in the shower and then sprayed them and the shower down with Kaboom.  I put the cat’s stuff and the bathmats in the washer while I waited.  I also swept.  It took less than 20 minutes to get the shower looking good with the Kaboom and 1/4 of a magic eraser.  It could still use some work, but I need something to really cut through soap scum.  It just kept coating the magic eraser and not allowing it to work.  I saw that someone used a mixture of vinegar and Dawn to clean their shower;  I think I’ll try that tomorrow.  M usually cleans the shower and does it regularly, but it has never looked as good as it should for the effort she puts into it.  Hope I can find a solution.

Sadly, one of the bathmats did not survive the washer.  But I had extras of both on standby, so no big loss.  Tomorrow I’ll work on what I originally planned to do today.  If there is time, I’ll also steam mop the floor and tackle the toilet.

Saturday

I got everything done!  The floor, well it doesn’t look great (it’s over 30 years old), but it looks so much better.  The laundry is almost all put away; I ran out of room in my drawers, so I’ll work on that tomorrow.  It is folded and all ready to go though.  The clothes for charity are all bagged up and just waiting for M to look through one more time.  I even did a load of dishes.  I’ll do another load tomorrow (some dishes have never been used and we don’t need them so I’m giving them to a friend).

About 10% of the kitchen/laundry area still needs unfucking.  It’s a set of shelves right next to the stairs.  M says she will do it tomorrow while I finish up the dishes, revisit the laundry shelves, and move onto the hallway.  The hallway is pretty uncluttered, so I’ll mainly be vacuuming.

I want to do the living room next, but I’ll probably start on the main bathroom instead.  We have been storing furniture for a friend for about 15 years (no joke!) in the living room and I need to make arrangements for her to take it all back.  It’s hard to see progress when her furniture is part of the problem, you know?  So, bathroom next it is.

Friday

I am so proud of myself!  It took a little over 5 20/10s, but I got the laundry area done.  The floor of the kitchen and laundry area are clear and swept.  I have the steam mop standing by ready for tomorrow.

I did two loads of laundry (one was put the fuck away, one is still in the dryer drying).  I have two more loads to do tomorrow (one is stuff to give to charity, other is regular laundry).  I also found some coats/jackets, but I need to check on cleaning those (may be dry clean only).

So the plan for tomorrow is still steam mopping the kitchen and laundry area.  While I’m doing that, I will start more laundry going.  I’ll also be putting the laundry away or sacking it up for charity.  I will also work on organizing the laundry shelves a little more.  If I get all that done, I’ll move what little is in the hallway and vacuum.  My cat is going to hate me tomorrow.

Thursday

I didn’t get tons done today since I had class.  However, I did fit in 2 20/10s clearing out the shelving in the laundry area.  I found some weird stuff, like an electric knife and Great White’s Twice Bitten on cassette.  I also found some undeveloped film from about 15 years ago (will have to get this developed soon).  There was also some small appliances we’re just not using that I may give to friends or charity (the laundry shelves are right next to the kitchen area).

I have a ways to go on the laundry area.  Still I hope to get all of it done tomorrow.  If not, I’ll work on it Saturday morning and aim for steam mopping in the afternoon/evening.  Sunday is open;  I figure I’ll know what to do next by the time it rolls around.

Wednesday

Didn’t get much done today.  Errands took longer than expected and the heat really got to me today.  I did sort some laundry and organize my yarn stash.  The stash was already in pretty good condition, but it’s something.  Also found some magic erasers in the laundry area, yay!

Kitchen still looks good.  I’m hoping the change will stick.  My goal for the rest of the week is to work on getting everything that isn’t shelving or cabinets off the floor and then steam mop the floor.  Really want to be ready to mop by Saturday.  Just have to move some stuff out of the laundry area (the actual kitchen area is fine now).  The flooring is old and set to be replaced soon, so I’m not going to aim for perfection.  I’m also going to work on sorting the laundry shelves and cleaning the fridge.  I’ll be very happy if all this gets done by Sunday evening.
